Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru

A majestic yellow figure that symbolizes Aomori - City of the Sea

It is possible to come and go between Honshu and Hokkaido by Shinkansen now that the Seikan Tunnel has opened. However, there was a long time when there was only a sea route with the Seikan Ferry. The Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru is the Hakkodamaru that is moored and preserved in a state at that time it was in service as a monument to Aomori - city of the sea - after the abolition of the Seikan Ferry. This ship once carried many passengers and cargo as a ferry connecting Aomori and Hakodate for 80 years from 1908 to 1988. It has now become a valuable spot that allows you to feel history. The bright yellow hull is loved by many citizens.

First, go inside from the entrance on the second floor. Purchase an admission ticket at the information desk and go up to the promenade deck on the third floor. This is a theater under the themes of the world of Seikan with the area in front of Aomori Station from around 1955 to 1965 reproduced in a diorama and records of the wake over 80 years of the Seikan Ferry. You will find an exhibition of models (e.g., ferries) and a wealth of materials here.

The fourth floor is the navigation deck. The chimney viewing platform has the best view on Hakkodamaru. You can appreciate a 360-degree panorama. Please note that this is closed during the winter and bad weather. The wheelhouse is also located on this floor.

You can head to the vehicle deck on the first floor with the elevator from here. This is a space for transporting railway vehicles which is rare in the world. It exhibits genuine articles (e.g., postal railway vehicles) as they were at that time. Finally, take a look at the engine room in the first basement floor. The route will then take you up to the exit on the second floor.
