Kyu Horikiri-tei (Former Horikiri Residence)
The former residence of the Horikiri Family who greatly contributed to the modern state and region
We recommend the Kyu Horikiri-tei (Former Horikiri Residence) as a spot to take a stroll from Iizaka Onsen. This is an old home of a wealthy farmer and merchant family that has been developed through repairs, restoration and partial new construction. These are buildings with high historical value. They include the largest and oldest dozo (thick earthen wall storehouse) existing in Fukushima Prefecture called Jukkengura and a modern Japanese-style main building. The current site area is approximately 4,000 square meters. It is said that the site was once about more than twice the size it is now.
There is a footbath and hand bath also accessible to wheelchair users in the residence. This is a place of relaxation where you can view the beautiful garden while relaxing in a hot spring with hot water that flows directly from the source. There are also flowers and trees with a stunning zelkova that is estimated to be 260 years old and white magnolias. These delight the eyes of visitors. The indirect lighting at night produces a different atmosphere to during the day.
