Tokyo 2020 Recovery Monument

The Miyagi Prefectural Sports Park “GRANDE 21” was developed as a base for sports and recreation in Miyagi Prefecture for the 21st century, combining sports facilities that can host domestic and international sports competitions with recreational facilities that can be enjoyed by everyone from infants to the elderly. The park grounds are rich in water and greenery, incorporating many elements from nature such as forests, rivers, and ponds.

GRANDE 21 is also home to a Tokyo 2020 Recovery Monument. The concept of the Tokyo 2020 Recovery Monuments project is to promote mutual communication through expressing gratitude from areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake for the support they received, as well as delivering messages of support to athletes participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In return, the project hopes to energize the disaster-stricken areas by expressing gratitude from the rest of the world to the residents of these areas for their support of the Tokyo 2020 Games, as well as through conveying the power and excitement of sports. Students from Tokyo University of the Arts created the monuments based on designs and messages selected by junior high and high school students. Messages of gratitude from junior high and high school students and autographs of Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic athletes are also drawn on the monuments.
