[Zao Onsen] Zao's Juhyo/Snow Monster(Zao's Rime/Frost Covered Trees of Zao)

Natural winter phenomena caused by the special weather conditions of the Zao mountain range

Due to the special weather conditions of the region, the ice trees in Zao grow large when seasonal winds containing subzero water droplets (supercooled water droplets) hit and instantly freeze the Japanese white pine trees (Abies sachalinensis).

The unique shape of these large ice formations, also known as snow monsters, is like a work of art created by nature.

The Zao Ropeway is the standard way to view the ice. The ropeway takes you to the top of Mt. Jizo, where you can see the juhyo (ice trees). You do not need to ski or snowboard to ride the ropeway.

During the season, “Juhyo Light-up” is held, and visitors can enjoy the Juhyo at night when the ropeway is illuminated with a variety of lights. The scenery of the ice trees illuminated by a variety of lights makes you feel as if you have wandered into another world.

The “Juhyo Fantasy Corridor Tour,” in which visitors ride on the “Night Cruiser,” a snowmobile, will also be held.
