Hadaka Mairi: A “naked shrine visit” considered to be a prayer for the quality and safety of sake breweries. Learn about Japanese spiritual culture in a traditional ceremony.(In-outbound Sendai Matsushima Inc.)
Hadaka Mairi (an annual Shinto ritual held in January during which people visit a shrine wearing white clothing that exposes the upper body to the bitter cold) is considered to be a prayer for the quality and safety of sake breweries. Learn about Japanese
One of the highlights of winter in Sendai, the “City of Trees,” is the sight of thousands of people from all over the city paying a visit to a shrine while wearing a white headband, wrapped in a white cloth, and holding a bell in the right hand, paper lantern in the left hand, and a piece of paper between the lips to prevent talking. This ongoing tradition was started by the toji (the professional guild or masters responsible for brewing sake [Japanese rice wine], in breweries), who would start the brewing process in the dead of winter. Visit a sake brewery, the roots of this tradition. For lunch, enjoy a pairing of food with sake. Then, choose between participating directly in the Hadaka Mairi procession, or participating indirectly by experiencing the ritual preparations, harai (a Shinto purification ritual to rid the mind and body of sins and uncleanliness) at the shrine, and the festival stands.
