Sengoku Picture Scrolls Revived in the Modern Age

The Yonezawa Uesugi Festival is a festival that heralds spring in Yonezawa and is held by the entire city in conjunction with the spring festival of Uesugi Shrine, which enshrines Uesugi Kenshin, the ancestor of the Uesugi family, and Matsumisaki Shrine, which enshrines the great lord Uesugi Youzan, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Naoe Kanetsugu and others. During the festival, the city is decorated in the colors of the festival and is abuzz with many events.


May 2: Uesugi Kenshin's departure for battle is reenacted. In a red-hot bonfire, the Gotensui ceremony and the invocation of military deities are solemnly performed for about an hour.


May 3: Uesugi Procession: A parade of more than 1,000 people in gorgeous Uesugi armor, centering on a portable shrine, floats, mounted warriors, and a drum and fife corps of elementary school students, parades through the city.


0 Kawanakajima Battle May 3 The clash between the armies of Uesugi and Takeda is said to be the greatest battle in the history of the Warring States period. The battle in the fall of the 4th year of Eiroku will be reenacted. The famous scene of the “Mitachi,Nanatachi”, in which Kenshin Uesugi cuts into Takeda's army single-handedly, and the battle scene in which about 700 warriors from both armies join forces to fight each other, is like a Sengoku picture scroll revived in the modern age.
