Hachinohe-maeoki is located at 40°30' north latitude, making it the northernmost major mackerel fishing port in Honshu, Japan.

Off the coast of Hachinohe, where sea water temperatures are low, large mackerel with high crude fat content are landed, having accumulated fat in the cold sea. Among them, mackerel caught in the coastal waters north of Sanriku during a certain period of time after autumn and landed at Hachinohe Port are certified as “Hachinohe Maeoki Saba” (mackerel from the waters off Hachinohe). Hachinohe's mackerel is widely promoted by market professionals and others as “the most fatty mackerel in Japan. Canned mackerel made from Hachinohe-maeoki Saba is also a famous souvenir. Various flavors are available to harmonize well with the fatty mackerel.

At “Saba no Eki,” a restaurant specializing in mackerel cuisine in Hachinohe City, you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes, including not only standard mackerel dishes such as grilled skewers, vinegared mackerel, and miso-broiled mackerel, but also Hachinohe senbei soup with mackerel broth, Hachinohe-maeoki mackerel in a pickled bowl, and more. One of the specialties is the Hachinohe silver mackerel toro zuke-don, which was inducted into the Hachinohe Ginsaba Toro Zuke-don Hall of Fame after winning the grand prix in the “National Gotochi Domburi Championship” two years in a row in 2016 and 2017. A generous serving of silver mackerel is served with a special sauce and condiments such as green onions and shiso leaves.
