The Hanamaki Matsuri (festival) is held every September and boasts a history of more than 400 years. The highlight of the festival is the 114 Hanamaki mikoshi (portable shrines), the world record for the largest number of mikoshi at one event. It is believed that there are gods living in these tiny shrines. Why not participate in the world’s largest mikoshi parade on the day of the Hanamaki Matsuri? A festival costume will be ready for you to wear so you can fully enjoy this memorable experience. (The Hanamaki Matsuri is held for three consecutive days in September every year, with the main event on the second Saturday. The mikoshi experience is on Saturday.)
