Mt. Akita-Komagatake
A treasure trove of flowers in the Moomin Valley!
The 1,637 m Mt. Akita-Komagatake is the collective name for several peaks including Mt. Onamedake, Mt. Odake, and Mt. Medake, and it is an active volcano at the southern tip of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The mountain is also known for its rich variety of alpine plants. A variety of flowers can be seen from June to September, but large colonies of komakusa are particularly beautiful in July.
Amida Pond, surrounded by boardwalks, is the center point for different hiking trails. If you go to the eighth station by bus, the hike to Amida Pond takes about 70 minutes. The change in elevation is negligible, so it is an easy hike for beginners. A little further from Amida Pond along a narrow foot path is also known as Moomin Valley, where you can enjoy the flowers and layouts while walking along the boardwalk.
Near the hiking entrance of the Kunimi Onsen course is Ishizuka Ryokan, a hot spring inn with its own source. Why not visit for soak after a day of hiking?
