The Ominato water supply source facility stands quietly in Suigenchi Park on a river terrace. It has the oldest stone arch dam in Japan, and was established for the Imperial Japanese Navy to maintain the water for its warships between 1902 and 1910. This is the first modern water supply facility built in the Tohoku region. It has been recognized as having extremely high historical value and construction technology, and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property.
Suigenchi Park is a spot where you can feel history and nature while strolling along several paths. Its many cherry trees and azaleas make it a good place to take a leisurely stroll. The cherry blossoms bloom in early May and the azaleas bloom from late May to mid-June. The park's trees and water make it a refreshing place even in the summer. Look out over Mutsu Bay from the top of the hill, which affords spectacular views regardless of the season.
There are also cafes and restaurants in the park. Be sure to visit the observation deck at the Kaibokan hall.
