Awashima is an island with a total circumference of just 23.0km. In Japanese “awa” means “millet” and it is said that this small island got its name because it resembled a grain of millet.Although small, the natural environment of this island stretches as far as the eye can see. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear blue sea or go on a fishing expedition, in addition to which the starry night sky is a sight that could never be seen in any of Japan’s large cities. Also, in the vicinity of the beach is a campsite with water supply and toilets, so that even first-time campers can enjoy themselves. There are also rental cycles available and it is recommended to cycle round the island, enjoying the beautiful scenery and natural environment.Awashima is linked to the mainland by ferry and high-speed boat from Iwafune Port in Murakami City in Niigata Prefecture.
