The Akiu Winery is located in the Akiu Onsen hot spring resort area, a 30-minute drive from the center of Sendai, and is known as the "backcountry" of Sendai. The winery's vineyards are planted with approximately 7,000 grapevines of 12 varieties, including Merlot and Pinotage for red wine, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris for white wine, and behind the vineyards is a mountain from which natural stone, commonly known as Akiu Ishi (tuff), was mined. The soil containing this Akiu Ishi produces wines with a mineral quality. Surrounded by vineyards, a glass-walled café and store offer wine while enjoying locally grown food, as well as souvenirs. In the brewing room (tank room) located behind the café, visitors can observe the preparation of grapes, work in progress, and bottling operations.
