This is a top flower viewing spot in Fukushima Prefecture. It is truly a paradise with its scenery completely bathed in the colors of spring, including not only cherry blossoms, but also plum blossoms, forsythia, flowering quince, magnolia, hanamomo flowering peach, and other colorful flowers that all bloom at once. If you climb to the top of the hill, you can see the landscape of Fukushima City below through the flowers in full bloom.
◆ Hanamomo no Sato (Tatenoyama, Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Early April to early MayHanamomo no Sato is a privately-owned area measuring 8,000 square meters with about 300 flowering peach trees of 40 varieties collected from all over the world. The area attracts more than 10,000 visitors in spring.
◆ Mt. Shinobu Park (1 Taishido, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] From mid-AprilFollowing the Japanese witch hazel which heralds the arrival of spring, Mt. Shinobu bustles with crowds of flower viewers in mid-April. The row of cherry blossom trees in front of the tax office and the cherry blossoms at Iwaya Kannon in the eastern part of Mt. Shinobu are also worth seeing, and the area around Komayama is lit up at night.
◆ The Hosui Cherry (Kodeyamaura, Kanezawa, Matsukawa-machi, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] From mid-AprilThis weeping cherry tree poses a magnificently beautiful figure. The cherry blossoms usually bloom from mid to late April annually. The tree is privately owned, but is open to viewing by the public during the flowering period. Many photography enthusiasts come to see the reflection of the cherry blossoms in the nearby agricultural reservoir.
◆ The “seed-planting sakura” of Jitokuji Temple (9 Teramae, Sabara, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] From mid-AprilThis weeping cherry tree is over 450 years old. It is known as the “seed-planting sakura” because people have long sown seeds when the tree’s flowers blossom. The tree offers a good view of the cityscape and is a registered natural monument of Fukushima City.
◆ Hanayashiki Park (Higashi Shinshakuuchi, Iino-machi, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Mid to late AprilAbout 7,000 flowering trees and plants bloom inside and outside the park, centered on hanamomo flowering peach trees, forsythia, and camellia. A handmade promenade is maintained and the view from the hill is stunning. Word of mouth about this spot has spread in recent years, and the number of visitors has increased rapidly.
◆ Jorakuen (38 Kojin, Sakuramoto, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Mid-April to early SeptemberThis traditional Japanese strolling garden centered on a pond is imbued with the atmosphere of the Muromachi period. Cherry blossoms bloom here in mid-April. In May, rhododendrons, irises, and other flowers bloom, followed by Japanese iris. In early autumn, Japanese bush clover reaches full bloom. Admission is 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for children.
◆ Azuma Sports Park (1 Kamikotoba, Sabara, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Late April to mid-JulyJust under 4,000 cherry trees, including 800 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees and a natural forest, bloom in this park, making it popular with families. In early summer, about 10,000 golden-rayed lilies, the queen of wildflowers, welcome visitors.
◆ Kumagaiso no Sato (Orchard Village) (Kamakurayama, Mizuhara, Matsukawa-machi, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Mid to late MayAbout 5,000 flowers bloom here. As such a large-scale collection of orchards growing wild is quite rare in Japan, the flowers are protected by local community groups. The area is open to the public for a limited time in May every year. There is an entrance to fee to help pay for preservation of the area.
◆ Doaidate Park Hydrangeas (7 Doaidate, Matsukawa-machi, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Early to mid-JulyAbout 4,500 hydrangeas bloom in this approximately five-hectare park. It’s lovely to take a stroll here on a sunny day, and extraordinary to enjoy the hydrangeas in their full glory amidst the raindrops during the rainy season.
◆ Takakurayama (Kamitakakura, Yamada, Fukushima City)[Most scenic period] Mid to late AprilSomei-Yoshino cherry trees as well as red, white, and crimson hanamomo flowering peach trees bloom on this small mountain.
