Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma(A sanctuary for migratory birds)

With an area of 491 hectares (369 hectares for Izunuma Swamp and 122 hectares for Uchinuma Swamp), it is the largest of its kind in the Tohoku region, characterized by its shallow depth of 80 centimeters on average and maximum 1.6 meters. The swamp (lake) is surrounded by vast rice paddies and the water from the swamp is used as a water source and also as flood control. The swamp is home to a wide variety of aquatic insects, fish, and birds, and is a wintering ground for geese and swans that migrate from Russia's far east, making it the second wetland in Japan to be designated as a Ramsar site.During the summer months from the latter half of July to the end of August, the Lotus Festival is held along with the lotus blooming season, and visitors can take a small cruise boat to see the lotus flowers blooming all over the lake.
