Many buildings reminiscent from the Meiji period (1868-1912) still exist here, such as the Toyoma Education Museum (an important cultural property, the former Tome Elementary School), the Police Museum (a prefectural designated cultural property, the former Tome Police Station Building) with its Western-style architecture, the Mizusawa Prefectural Office Memorial Hall (the former Mizusawa Prefectural Office Building), which was set up when the prefecture was abolished, along with warehouse-style merchant houses also reminiscent of the Meiji era. Also, if you take a side street, you will find samurai residences from the feudal era and historical sites that still remain.Because of this historical townscape, the town has come to be called the "Meiji Village of Miyagi."
