The Takashimizu Observatory, 797 meters above sea level, is located on the Takashimizu Highland at the foot of Mt. Ishigamiyama, one of the three mountains of Tono, and offers a spectacular view of the Tono Basin. The area is surrounded by mountains, and, during the rice-planting season, the rice paddies are filled with water, which makes the entire basin look like a lake.
In early summer, you can enjoy beautiful views of the azure blue sky and green fields. To have the chance to see a stunning sea of clouds, visit from late September to October for an incredible view that has attracted photographers from all over.
On the way to Takashimizu Observatory, you may encounter wild animals such as Japanese deer, antelopes, and raccoon dogs. Herds of Japanese deer may make an appearance at night. Please drive safely and keep your speed down when driving along these roads.
[Note] ・There are no toilets at the observatory. ・The road is closed from mid-November to early May every year.
