Ouchijuku was a flourishing post-town in the 17th century. Today the town’s traditional buildings are officially protected and a popular local tourist destination. Visitors are taken back to Japan’s Edo period as they walk along rows of thatched-roof homesteads. The building interiors display the traditional local lifestyles through features including old-fashioned Irori fireplaces and household implements of the era.
The Ouchijuku Snow Festival takes place annually on the second weekend of February. Handmade snow lanterns are placed along the streets of the town and are lit at dusk by local men dressed in traditional loincloths. Fireworks displays are held on Saturday evening and create a spectacular contrast with the snow-covered buildings and illuminated snow lanterns.
The festival also features period costume competitions, performances of Taiko drumming and a noodle-eating competition. Come and enjoy an unforgettable experience at this winter festival of traditional Japan!
