Fossil excavation in Minamisanriku
The Utatsu district of Minamisanriku is where the fossil of one of the world's oldest ichthyosaurs, which lived in the Triassic period about 240 to 250 million years ago, was discovered. The district is designated as a natural monument. It is also a place where many ammonites and other fossils have been discovered. Even if you are unfamiliar with fossils, the instructors will happily teach you about ichthyosaurs and the other fossils.
