Minamisanriku-cho has experienced various natural disasters in their long history. During the times, people were sometimes unable to prepare the rice cakes and sake which they usually gave as offerings to the gods. In these situations, they cut paper into shapes, such as rice cakes and sake, and offered them to the gods; these are called ""kiriko.""
